Una (Mara) is introduced in the way young, 'troubled' woman are so often in independent cinema, dancing at a club and then having a quick sexual encounter in the bathroom. She wakes up the next morning, and has clearly made a decision, picking up her things and driving. She will arrive at the workplace of a man whose colleagues know him as Peter, but she knows his real name is Ray (Ben Mendelsohn). Ray used to be Una's neighbor, and is notably older than she is. In flashbacks, we see glimpses of a young girl, a 13-year-old Una, with a younger Ray, and the fuzzy picture becomes clearer before Una puts words to it. Ray abused Una. The two were so involved that they almost ran away together, but Ray was caught and did four years in jail. Why has Una tracked him down so many years later? What does she hope to get out of him and what other secrets could he reveal?

A young woman tracks down the older man who preyed on her as a child, forcing them both to confront the damage done by what happened 15 years earlier. A young woman confronts her adult lover from her childhood looking for closure, but the secrets of their past threaten to unravel his new life. What follows is.

The best element of 'Una' on a screenwriting level is the complexity Harrower allows his duo. Well-captured by Mara, Una is a maelstrom of emotions, still sometimes looking like the 13-year-old girl who's more upset that Ray left the night they had sex than he abused her in the first place. Abandonment seems to be her overriding emotion, and not just about that night specifically, but overall. She's still stuck in the same small town, where everyone knew her story and where she's been unable to move on, whereas Ray has a whole new life with a new partner and a good job. Why is that fair? Meanwhile, Ray is first presented as someone who realizes he made a horrible mistake but attests that he truly loved Una and had never done anything similar before or would do anything similar after. He argues repeatedly that he's not a child abuser, but Andrews and Harrower allow suspicion to creep in on the viewer. Is Ray a broken man who made a horrible mistake or a lifelong predator? Mendelsohn captures this complexity well, always able to find shades of menace under his characters. They're both fantastic.

Film Una

The problem with 'Una' is structural. At first, it seems interesting that Ray and Una's first encounter in years will come at his office as the world goes on around him and the sound of co-workers leaks through the walls. However, it soon feels like 'Una' the film can't sit still. We meet Ray's co-worker Scott (Riz Ahmed), who may get fired that day, and Ray and Una have to hide from his boss. The thematic undercurrent is there—this is a relationship hidden from society—but it's underdeveloped and distracting. 'Una' works when Mendelsohn and Mara are allowed to look in each other's eyes and convey years of rage and regret, and less so when it feels like the film is actively trying to get in their way.

He served four years in jail for his crime, treated as the lowest form of humanity by fellow inmates. Having changed his name from 'Ray' to 'Peter Trevelyan', he has risen to management level in a large warehouse. She grew up lonely and confused, living with her mother in the same house they lived in before the incident, and in her adulthood, now takes solace in going out for one-night stands and returning home before dawn.

Una finds where he works through a newspaper photograph and confronts him. She is still emotionally wounded from what happened. Instead of empathizing with her, Ray at first fears she may want to damage his career or even kill him.

Ray leaves the room to attend a critical staff meeting, where he must announce cutbacks and layoffs to employees. He is unable to function at the work meeting, leaves abruptly, and hides from angry executives and his fellow staff members. Una finds him. They quarrel: he insists that he was genuinely in love with her, is not by nature a hebephile, and had not been 'grooming' her. He tells Una he is now married to a woman his own age. It's obvious that Ray and Una are still attracted to one another. To Una's surprise, he explains that his 'abandonment' of her was a misunderstanding: he had needed a walk and a drink to clear his head, but returned to find that she had vanished. She instigates sex with him, but before it goes too far, Ray abruptly leaves and returns to his home, leaving her feeling abandoned once again.

Una leaves the warehouse with Scott (Ahmed), a young single man, and Ray's co-worker. She invites herself to Scott's flat, where she seduces him. She then persuades Scott, by claiming to be 'Pete's' daughter, to escort her to Ray's comfortable suburban home.

Ray and his wife are hosting a large party, and he is shocked to see Scott and Una arrive. The wife and Una talk briefly, and she drops a hint that their marriage is not entirely happy (earlier, we saw Ray have sex with his wife with his eyes closed on getting home). Una wanders upstairs, where she curls up on the bed of a teenage girl - the daughter of Ray's wife, from an earlier marriage, also aged about 13 - who is obviously loved and cared for. The girl enters and loudly demands an explanation. Ray denies Una's unspoken accusation. He insists Una is the only one of that age he has ever desired, that she still is 'the only one' as he kisses her face, all while his wife, step-daughter and Scott look on from a distance. Una walks off into the dark.
